Here is a beginners guide to organic gardening. I will cover all of the topics needed to get your organic garden up and running in no time. Even if you live in an apartment with a small deck to work with, you can still learn how to grow your own organic vegetables in containers/pots. I like to stick to the basics that way I am not buying things I really do not need. Let’s begin with a breakdown of supplies needed to have a successful garden:
1. Compost/ Mulch
3. Leather garden gloves
4. Pruning shears
5. Watering can/Sprayer
6. Containers or pots (if you’re not using the ground)
7. Seeds, of course 🙂
If you plan on having a large garden, you will also need the following items:
2. Spading fork
3. Leaf rake
4. Bow rake
Now that you have your list down, here is a great resource for saving money on your garden supplies- Craigslist! You might not have thought of checking there, but they have free, barter, and farm-garden categories that I suggest looking at.
Now, for any one just starting out, I highly suggest getting this amazing EarthBox kit. EarthBox 1010002 Garden Kit, Terra Cotta is marked down 40% and that is a nice savings, but remember, prices change at any time on Amazon!
The features include:

If you want to go straight to planting your seeds outside in either containers, pots, or just the ground, here are your next steps. I have included directions on planting a few different plants.
1. Grab your supplies mentioned in the beginning from your local Home Depot, Lowes, or elsewhere
Simply follow the directions on the cucumber seeds package when planting your seeds. The main things to remember when growing cucumbers are as follows:
1. Always use mulch
2. Always keep the soil/mulch moist
3. Give them afternoon shade when temps are HOT!
4. Keep weeds removed
Follow the directions you find on your tomato seeds packet when planting your seeds. The main things to remember when growing tomatoes are as follows:
1. Make sure they will have at least 6 hours of sunlight each day
2. Always keep Tomato plants soil/mulch moist
3. Never crowd your plants. Tomato plants need about two feet between each one.
Growing Pepper Plants
When you pick up your pepper seedlings, follow the directions on the package for planting. Some key notes on growing pepper plants are as follows:
1. Use mulch
2. Pepper plants need at least 6 hours of sun each day
3. Always keep the soil/mulch moist
4. Never harvest peppers by pulling them off. Use shears.
When temps get above 80, I place my potted plants in the shade after about an hour in the sunlight.
